Sam Price-Waldman is a documentary director and cinematographer based in Los Angeles.
He’s known for his intimate, reflective, visually-driven style of vérité filmmaking.
As a director, his work is characterized by an empathetic, curious, quietly humorous approach to storytelling.
His short documentaries have earned eight Vimeo Staff Picks and have been featured on PBS, National Geographic, and The Atlantic, as well as at film festivals including Full Frame, Camden, AFI Docs, Big Sky, Santa Fe, Hot Springs, Atlanta, and Nashville.
Sam’s most recent film, The Life We Have, won Best Short Documentary at AmDocs, the Audience Award at Mountainfilm, Best of Festival at 5Point and Flagstaff Mountain Film, and screened at over 20 others.
His films honor complexity and emotional nuance over certainty, and often find beauty in the small, everyday moments that make us human.
As a cinematographer, Sam is drawn to capturing composed, artful frames in unpredictable environments. He enjoys abstract, surreal imagery and is adept at filming in emotionally delicate situations, where sensitivity and empathy are paramount. .
Sam was a series cinematographer on both seasons of the hit HBO docuseries The Vow, where his work was nominated for a Cinema Eye Honors Award for Outstanding Cinematography in a Broadcast Series. He was also a cinematographer on the acclaimed Showtime docuseries, The Lincoln Project and has shot feature documentaries for platforms including HBO, Netflix, Showtime, PBS, and Amazon Prime.
Sam began his career at The Atlantic, where he worked as a producer, shooter, and editor from 2013-2016, before moving into freelance cinematography and directing.
He holds a BFA in Film Production from Chapman University.
